watch degree of hope

2020 has been a year that tests Hong Kong’s resilience to adversity, and PolyU Design students achieved a double-double for that test. The first is the doubling of their mental capacity to face social disruptions and a pandemic that could have a knock-on effect on the economies they are about to enter into. Then with this stretched brainpower, they are required to double their learning capacity in an environment that lacked the fundamental access to understand human behaviors that is critical to the success in design.

In planning for the 2020 Show, we wanted to highlight the strong ability of designers to see things in many perspectives that enabled them to stride forward in a year of extreme learning. How can we carry on a tradition of physical exhibition amid all the teaching, production and distancing limitations? How can we show the design making efforts and working attitude of students in a virtual environment? Could this be an opportunity for the thinking and beauty of design to offer a degree of hope and enlightenment? Could this be the chance for unusual collaborations to form for impactful projects for the future?

Students, faculty, and the Show team must be applauded for their attempt to live the spirit of PolyU Design to make possibilities endless. We hope more will connect through design soon.
